Sport
Challenge, competition and confidence
In Years 7 and 8, sport is about challenge, competition and confidence. Pupils build on firm foundations, taking pride in representing their school, developing leadership skills and preparing for future sporting success at senior school and beyond.
In Years 7 and 8, sport takes on a new level of challenge and ambition. Pupils refine their technical skills, take on leadership roles and compete with growing confidence in both team and individual disciplines.
Our specialist sports staff prepare pupils for the next stage of their sporting journey, helping them to aim high in inter-school competitions and, where appropriate, to work towards sports scholarships at senior schools. Training sessions focus on performance, resilience and tactical understanding, while maintaining the balance of fun and friendship that defines sport at Great Walstead.
Swimming continues in our on-site pool, where pupils build stamina and skill through both lessons and competitive galas. Games afternoons and fixtures allow every child to take part, whether competing at a high level or simply enjoying the thrill of being part of a team.
By this stage, pupils are developing independence, leadership and the ability to motivate others. They leave Great Walstead with not only strong sporting foundations but also the confidence, discipline and team spirit that will serve them for life.
Our approach to teaching sport
Listen to Mark Lloyd, Director of Sport explain how we teach sport at Great Walstead.
Our 3 core aims
In the sports department, we have three core aims that guide our approach to teaching and coaching:
- Develop independent and resilient young sportsmen and women who are creative and confident decision makers.
- Provide a variety of team and individual sporting experiences for all pupils.
- Instil pupils with a life-long love of sport and an understanding of physical health and well-being.
These combine to give a sporting experience that captures excellence, inclusivity, and enjoyment for all. Whether it’s competing in a national final, or playing a new sport for the first time, every sporting achievement is valued and recognised.
Clubs for every curiosity
After-school clubs extend the fun even further, with opportunities to try sailing, karate, dance, horse riding and golf. With so much on offer, every child finds their place, their confidence and a lifelong love of sport.
