ISI Inspection Report Highlights 2025
November 2025
The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspects independent schools for the Department for Education, offering an objective view of school life.
This page shares a short, parent-friendly summary of what inspectors observed during their recent visit to Great Walstead School.
Hear from the Headmaster
It was very special to see that, in their short time with us, the ISI inspectors were able to capture the essence of Great Walstead School.
They recognised that our pupils enjoy their lessons, apply themselves diligently and are supported by teachers who hold ambitious expectations for their learning. I was also delighted to see the inspectors note how learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom - something we see as central to developing a genuine love of learning, particularly in the younger years.
The inspection looks far beyond classroom activity alone, and it was lovely to see the inspectors recognise the support and care pupils show towards one another across the school. Overall, the report reflects the academic ambition we hold for our children, achieved within a community where kindness and respect are lived every day.
Chris Calvey,
Headmaster
What stands out
The ISI report highlights a school where pupils are encouraged to work hard, think deeply and enjoy learning. Teaching is ambitious and well planned, while lessons remain engaging, dynamic and responsive to pupils’ needs.
Learning at Great Walstead extends well beyond the classroom. Inspectors recognised the value of learning both indoors and outdoors, with the school’s woodland environment playing an important role in fostering curiosity, exploration and respect for the natural world - particularly in the Early Years.
Just as importantly, inspectors saw a community built on strong values. Pupils treat one another with respect, care and kindness, and are supported to grow not only academically, but socially, emotionally and morally. Opportunities to build confidence, character and leadership are woven throughout school life, helping pupils develop into thoughtful, resilient and self-assured young people.
