Performing Arts
In Years 7 and 8, the Performing Arts take on a new depth and purpose. Pupils refine their skills in art, music and drama, developing confidence, creativity and leadership along the way. With inspiring performance opportunities and access to our on-site Art Studio, they are encouraged to explore their passions and express themselves with growing independence.
Drama
In Years 7 and 8, drama becomes a space for pupils to stretch their creativity and explore performance with increasing independence. They take on a variety of projects, from devising original pieces to exploring classic and contemporary scripts.
Collaboration, communication and confidence sit at the heart of every lesson. Pupils are encouraged to direct, perform and critique with empathy and maturity, skills that prepare them for both senior school and life beyond the stage.
There are numerous opportunities to perform throughout the year, culminating in the full-scale school production, a highlight of the Performing Arts calendar that brings together pupils from across the upper years. Regular theatre trips, workshops and specialist masterclasses also deepen understanding and inspire ambition.
Music
By Years 7 and 8, music at Great Walstead is both personal and purposeful. Pupils refine their technical and performance skills while deepening their understanding of theory, composition and musical history.
Alongside curriculum lessons, many pupils take individual instrumental and vocal tuition, and contribute to our rich musical life through ensembles, the chamber choir and the school orchestra. These groups perform regularly at concerts and services throughout the year, developing teamwork, leadership and a lifelong appreciation of music.
Our Performing Arts Thursdays continue to showcase pupil talent, with informal performances offering a platform to share music and drama with peers in a supportive, creative environment.
Art
In the final years at Great Walstead, art becomes a powerful way for pupils to express individuality and develop a personal creative style. Working in our dedicated art studio alongside specialist teachers and artists in residence, they experiment with a range of media including painting, printmaking, mixed media and sculpture.
Pupils are encouraged to think critically, explore ideas with depth and prepare portfolios for art scholarships or future creative study. They also take part in collaborative exhibitions and community art projects that develop both artistic confidence and creative thinking.
This hands-on, exploratory approach helps pupils see art not just as a subject, but as a skill for life - one that fosters resilience, imagination and self-expression.
