Sport
A sporting spirit that shines through
Sport at Great Walstead is full of variety, teamwork and fun. From their first match to discovering new activities, every child is encouraged to get involved, develop confidence and enjoy being active in our spacious grounds and on-site swimming pool.
Sport at Great Walstead is varied, inclusive and full of energy. Every child is encouraged to take part, try new activities and develop confidence through teamwork and play. Our Wednesday & Thursday afternoon matches offer something for everyone, with boys enjoying football, rugby, hockey and cricket while girls take part in netball, hockey, football and cricket.
In addition to these core sports, pupils have regular opportunities to enjoy athletics, tennis, cross-country and swimming with lessons taking place in our on-site, covered pool. The PE curriculum also adds variety with activities such as badminton, basketball, trampolining, gymnastics, street dance and sports leadership.
Our approach to teaching sport
Listen to Mark Lloyd, Director of Sport explain how we teach sport at Great Walstead.
Our 3 core aims
In the sports department, we have three core aims that guide our approach to teaching and coaching:
- Develop independent and resilient young sportsmen and women who are creative and confident decision makers.
- Provide a variety of team and individual sporting experiences for all pupils.
- Instil pupils with a life-long love of sport and an understanding of physical health and well-being.
These combine to give a sporting experience that captures excellence, inclusivity, and enjoyment for all. Whether it’s competing in a national final, or playing a new sport for the first time, every sporting achievement is valued and recognised.
Through sport, children learn far more than physical skills. They build resilience, develop problem-solving abilities and learn to lead with empathy and encouragement. Every effort and achievement is recognised, whether it is representing the school at a fixture, mastering a new technique or simply showing great team spirit.
Clubs for every curiosity
After-school clubs extend the fun even further, with opportunities to try sailing, karate, dance, horse riding and golf. With so much on offer, every child finds their place, their confidence and a lifelong love of sport.
