Ready for What Comes Next

Building independence, depth of knowledge and confidence for senior school and beyond.

A Confident Step into Senior School

In Years 7 and 8, academic learning at Great Walstead takes on a new energy and purpose. Pupils are encouraged to think more deeply, question more boldly and take greater ownership of their learning. With small classes and specialist teachers across every subject, they are supported to develop the study habits, curiosity and independence that prepare them for senior school life.

The focus shifts towards critical thinking, problem solving and applying knowledge with confidence. Lessons stretch and challenge pupils, while still maintaining the warmth and encouragement that define the Great Walstead experience.

Stretch, Challenge and Scholarship Preparation

For many, these final two years bring opportunities to prepare for scholarship applications in academics, sport, music or art. Teachers work closely with each pupil to nurture their talents, provide targeted support and build confidence for assessments and interviews. This tailored approach ensures that every child can achieve their potential and take pride in their achievements.

We are proud of our record of success, with pupils gaining scholarships and awards to leading senior schools including Brighton College, Ardingly College, Hurstpierpoint College, Worth School and beyond.

Skills for Life

Beyond subject mastery, our aim is to help pupils develop the qualities that will carry them far beyond the classroom. The 7Cs – curiosity, courage, creativity, collaboration, compassion, commitment and confidence – continue to shape every aspect of learning. By the time they leave Great Walstead, pupils have learned not only how to succeed in exams, but how to think for themselves, persevere through challenges and take joy in discovery.

A Love of Learning That Lasts

Years 7 and 8 are a time to celebrate just how far each pupil has come – and to inspire a lifelong love of learning. Whether they are debating in English, investigating in science or tackling a new language, every lesson encourages curiosity and confidence. Pupils leave Great Walstead ready for their next chapter, grounded in strong values, equipped with deep knowledge and prepared to take on the world with enthusiasm and integrity.
