An Inspiring Prep Curriculum
In the Prep School, learning becomes more specialised, with subject teachers inspiring pupils to think independently, make connections and explore ideas in greater depth. Curiosity, creativity and the confidence to learn from mistakes sit at the heart of every lesson.
Subjects are linked through engaging, cross-curricular topics, giving children the opportunity to apply their knowledge in meaningful, connected ways. This approach encourages collaboration, problem-solving and interdisciplinary thinking, skills that will serve them well throughout their education and beyond.
Individual Attention, Strong Foundations
Small class sizes mean every child receives the attention they need to thrive. Teachers know their pupils well: how they learn, what excites them and where they need encouragement.
This personalised approach ensures strong foundations in all subjects, while also helping children develop the emotional intelligence, resilience and empathy that comes from feeling understood and valued.
Preparing for the Next Stage
From Year 5 onwards, teachers begin to identify particular academic strengths or passions. Through targeted support, enrichment and challenge, we help pupils prepare for scholarship opportunities at 11+, both within Great Walstead and for senior schools beyond.
This builds on our proud record of academic success, with pupils achieving scholarships and awards to schools including Brighton College, Ardingly, Hurstpierpoint, Worth, Bede’s, Wellington College and Millfield.

The Journey to Years 7 & 8
By the time pupils reach Years 7 and 8, they are ready to take greater ownership of their learning. The emphasis shifts towards independence, leadership and preparation for senior school life.
This is a time when our values, the 7Cs (Curiosity, Courage, Creativity, Collaboration, Compassion, Commitment and Confidence), become truly embedded. They shape how pupils approach learning, relationships and challenge, giving them a mindset that lasts far beyond their time at Great Walstead.
