EMMA SCOTLAND
DEPUTY HEAD ACADEMIC
Emma joined Great Walstead in 2003 and has taught across the Prep School before becoming Deputy Head Academic. A former professional opera singer, she brings creativity, high expectations and a passion for unlocking children’s potential to every lesson and leadership decision.
From opera stages to classrooms
Before teaching, Emma performed with leading opera companies including Glyndebourne and Opera North. Today, she channels that same energy into inspiring academic curiosity and confidence. She still loves opera, and when she is not at school, she can often be found enjoying listening to her son playing music.
Believing in every learner
Emma knows that learning takes courage, perseverance and joy. She encourages pupils to seize opportunities, embrace challenge and take pride in every step of their progress. Her experience as an ISI inspector also means she brings a wealth of insight to shaping teaching excellence at Great Walstead.
If she weren’t a teacher...
Emma imagines she would travel the world visiting opera houses, soaking up culture and music wherever she goes. For now, watching her son perform professionally brings huge pride, especially as both of her children began their journeys here at Great Walstead.
