In a world where children are exposed to smartphones earlier than ever, Great Walstead School proudly supports the growing “Smartphone-Free Childhood” movement. We operate a strict no-mobile-phone policy, not just as a rule, but as a philosophy.
Our pupils don’t need smartphones for their dopamine kicks. Instead of chasing digital likes or notifications, they enjoy real-world rewards, whether it’s the thrill of climbing a tree, the teamwork of building a den, or the satisfaction of cooking over a campfire during our outdoor learning sessions. These moments are part of a wider, carefully balanced school experience that prioritises emotional wellbeing and academic excellence.
This isn’t about nostalgia, it’s about science, safeguarding concerns and wellbeing. Studies now show the negative effects of early smartphone and social media exposure, from reduced attention spans to anxiety, disrupted sleep, and early access to inappropriate content. By removing that pressure, our children can simply be children, free to explore, play, and stay younger for longer.
