Sport

"Sport for all" is what we strive to achieve within the PE and Games department here at Walstead. We have superb facilities useable throughout the year: the games field hosts rugby and football matches in the autumn/winter and cricket, rounders and athletics in the summer. Our indoor swimming pool is used each week by all year groups from Year 2 upwards. We have an all weather pitch where boys and girls develop their hockey skills and netball courts which double up as tennis courts in the summer. Our large Sports Hall provides excellent facilities, such as indoor cricket nets and courts for basketball, netball and tennis and badminton, especially useful when it rains!

Each child from Year 3 upwards is given the opportunity to represent the school in matches. To enable this to happen we provide fixtures not just for the A teams, but also for the B, C and on occasion D teams on a Wednesday afternoon, followed by that well-earned match tea.

Children from Year 3 upwards are also involved in the extensive programme of house tournaments throughout the year, which provide more competitive opportunities for the children to experience.

Through the PE and Games curriculum a programme of sporting activities is delivered to ensure that children experience a range of activities throughout the school, including net and invasion games, fitness, athletics, fielding games and swimming. Great Walstead children will develop and improve their range of sporting skills, including co-ordination, flexibility, strength, speed and stamina as well as an understanding of working together as part of a team.
