OGW Day 2011
Well over 120 people attended OGW Day on the 12th June. The day started with coffee in the atrium followed by a chapel service led by the Headmaster. Gordon Parke, past headmaster, spoke beautifully about Great Walstead. Hugh Lowries, also a past headmaster, closed the service with a lovely blessing. Following this were tours of the school, which brought some pupils, staff and even the Chair of Governors, into tour guide mode. There was no corner of the school that was not looked at and it was fascinating to hear the different stories about how the use of rooms had changed.
We then all had a splendid lunch served by Head of Catering Helena Kent and her team. The Great Walstead Occasionals cricket team of current parents, with their families, joined us. Despite the darkening clouds the decision was made to carry on with the cricket match against the OGW team.
This was an excellent game, even in the trying conditions after it had begun to rain. The game was supposed to be a 20/20 match and we managed to get the first innings in before warm cups of tea. In the second innings the match was reduced to10 overs and the OGW team got home with a ball to spare!
All in all, it was an excellent day. Next year OGW Day will be on Sunday June 24th 2012. We also hope to arrange some other events through the year so we will endeavour to keep OGWs informed.
