Middles

Great Walstead’s Middle School or as we like to call it ‘The Marvellous Middles’ is made up of pupils from Years 5 and 6.

It is our vision that the Middles ‘Opens the Door’ to the children’s future. They are helped through the transition from enjoying a close relationship with one ‘key’ class teacher to that of benefiting from specialist teaching across the curriculum while being cared for by an overseeing form tutor. This allows our pupils to grow and develop the skills needed for independence in a safe, supportive, stimulating and fun environment.

We continue to have high expectations of the children academically – indeed the pace of work steps up a notch as the children work with increasing independence and tackle additional homework. There are ability “sets” for key subjects such as Mathematics and French – depending on the make-up of the year group and the timetable.

Alongside academic work, the children are encouraged to develop their artistic, musical or sporting talents. There are a range of exciting enrichment events (for example, Tudor Day and 1940s day), and outings to Hampton Court and Newhaven Fort. Outdoor pursuits and team-building tasks take place at Carroty Wood and in our own woods.

It is exciting to see how our Marvellous Middles mature and develop as well-rounded, confident children who are happy and live life to the full.
