Mathematics
“Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics, I assure you that mine are greater.”
Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955)
The mathematics department at Great Walstead aims to allow all pupils the opportunity to achieve their full mathematical potential through a variety of teaching and learning methods. We have a well–resourced department, and a wide variety of materials and approaches that are used to deliver the curriculum.
We aim to maximise the potential for success of each pupil. To achieve this we strive to create a purposeful atmosphere within each mathematics lesson. We have high expectations of our pupils and we aim to provide meaningful contexts for the learning of the subject. Our teachers provide opportunities for pupils to use their skills and creativity through problem solving and investigation.
Our pupils are taught in class groups until Year 5. At the beginning of Year 5, the maths lessons are taught in set groups according to ability. This allows us to provide the right level of challenge for our children and the necessary intervention and support for pupils who need extra help.
Our Key Stage 2 pupils take the Primary Mathematics Challenge in the Autumn term, whilst our Senior School pupils take the secondary junior individual challenge. We have played host to the UKMT regional finals for the Mathematics team challenge for five years now and we field teams of our talented mathematicians who greatly enjoy the opportunity to compete against like-minded pupils.
