Learning support
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us"
Oliver Wendell Holmes
The Learning support department recognises each student as a unique and individual learner with strengths and needs. We teach, support and encourage each pupil to engage in and recognise his or her learning style in order to develop the potential that “lies within”.
Learning support is, above all, tailored to the particular requirements of each child. Our provision is always “bespoke” and may involve a combination of withdrawal for one to one tuition from our in-house specialists in the dedicated suite of the Learning support department, the provision of help within the classroom from a learning support assistant and/or access to the speech and language and occupational therapists who work regularly with the learning support team.
The process of tailoring support for an individual might start with concerns raised by teachers (as part of our on-going assessment of progress) or parents. The Learning support team would lead a series of discussions to determine whether a child needs specific support and how best to deliver it. We will bring in specialists from outside the school if appropriate. This is the start of a continuing cycle of assessment, intervention and review. We encourage close partnership with parents throughout this process so that, with regular communication, what happens at school can be supported at home and vice versa.
Our inclusive and nurturing ethos aims to ensure that children maintain a positive attitude to their learning and maintain a sense of self-worth.
