Admissions Procedure

Nursery

Children come into the Nursery at the beginning of any term or after half term, provided that they are 2 and a half or over and that they are dry. We assume that all children will continue on from the Nursery into our Pre-Prep and provide places accordingly.

Pre-Prep and Main School

Our main entry into the school is in September. There is no entrance examination but we do like to assess all children (except those coming into Reception) before they are accepted into the school. This allows us to be sure that the school can provide the education that your child needs, that the balance of ability within the school is maintained, and so that he or she can be correctly placed in the school.
At all stages the first step in the admissions process is to register your child. This puts him or her on our lists for entry or on our waiting list if there is one (you would be told if there were a waiting list).
Following registration, we will ask you to confirm your place by means of a deposit which is returnable when your child leaves the school.

The School Day

School is open at 8.30am and begins at 8.45 for pupils, although some make arrangements to come earlier for breakfast. Nursery and Pre-Prep children finish at 3.30pm and children in Years 3 - 8 may leave at 4.30, though many stay later for after school care, prep and voluntary after school activities.

Parental Involvement

Parents are always made most welcome at the school. We believe in partnership with you. There is a thriving parents' association which organises a number of most successful social events and raises substantial sums for the benefit of the school. We hope very much that parents will feel themselves to be a vital part of our school community.

The school offers a number of Academic, Music, Drama and Sports scholarships.

Academic scholarships of up to half the tuition fees for an exceptional scholar are awarded to children who demonstrate that they will be capable of winning substantial scholarships to their next school, all-round ability enhancing the likelihood of an award being given. Successful candidates will also be children who are likely to make an outstanding contribution to the general life of the School in and out of the classroom.

Music Scholarships are awarded to children promising musical ability who will make a substantial contribution to the musical life of the School.

Drama and Art Scholarships are awarded to children who have an outstanding talent and who will make a substantial contribution to the arts within the School.

Sports Scholarships are awarded to children who are likely to make an outstanding personal and all-round or specialist sporting contribution to the life of the School.

Scholarships are open to children already at Great Walstead and to external candidates, but not to children already in other IAPS schools. Application should be made by the second week in January for children who will become aged between 8 and 12 (for Academic and Music Scholarships) and aged between 9 and 12 (for Sports Scholarships) and aged 12 or 13 (for Drama scholarships) inclusive during the following academic year (beginning on 1st September) when the award will become effective.
