Educating Children to Believe in Themselves

A message from the Headmaster:

"I would like to offer you a warm welcome to Great Walstead School.

A former parent once described Great Walstead as "a place of mud and love" which I think goes quite a long way to characterising the spirit of our school. We have a wonderful location in the heart of the Sussex countryside and our children thrive in the opportunities offered by our 269 acres.

We are a Christian school whose staff, above all, seek to value and to nurture each child. We want our children to be happy and to enjoy their time with us.I hope that you will also gain an impression of a school that gives children a tremendous start in life. The rounded education we offer, coupled with our impressive investment in modern facilities, give children here every opportunity to discover and develop talent. We help children to reach their potential in the academic sphere but, just as importantly, to develop in all things creative, social and spiritual.

The only way to really judge is to come and see for yourself. Please contact us to arrange a visit and discover what makes Great Walstead such a special place."

What is Great Walstead?

Great Walstead School is a Christian day and weekly boarding school for girls and boys between the ages of 2 ½ and 13 years. It has some 450 children overall and they are educated in the school's Nursery, Pre-Prep and Main School departments. Academic, music, sports and drama scholarships are available. The school is a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools.

Where to find us

directions

The school is set in 269 acres of grounds just a mile and a half from the picturesque village of Lindfield in West Sussex. The school is less than ten minutes drive from Haywards Heath mainline station, with its fast services to London and Brighton, and, for those arriving from further afield, is only some thirty minutes drive from Gatwick Airport.

In a nutshell, what makes Great Walstead School special?

Hard work in a happy atmosphere

Children at Great Walstead School are relaxed and confident; they enjoy learning. In this atmosphere and with our small class sizes (average 16), each individual is encouraged to reach his or her full potential. The school has consistently excellent results in Common Entrance and scholarship examinations to senior schools.

Expert staff with a commitment to your children

With their training and experience, our staff are able to oversee the development of each individual child. The form teacher is a key influence in a child's life and we ensure that these teachers are committed and inspirational people. Specialist teaching begins at 5 and the amount of input by graduate specialists increases as the children progress through the school.

Moral and spiritual values laying a foundation for life

We believe that secure Christian values provide children with the moral and spiritual foundation that that they can build on now and for the rest of their lives.

Tremendous opportunities

We want children to have the opportunity to discover and explore their talents in music, drama, art, craft, design technology and outdoor pursuits. Staff encourage enthusiastic participation in and out of school time! Team and individual sporting activity are very much part of the life of the school and we have an impressive record in local and national events.

Flexibility to meet parents' needs

We recognise that family life is increasingly complex and busy and we do our best to support parents' needs. For older children (7 plus) there are flexible boarding arrangements - weekly or occasional. For even the youngest in our Nursery we can provide care from 8.00am to 6.00pm during term time and through half terms and holidays as well. We also run various activity weeks during holidays for the different age groups in the school.
