Giving to others
We feel that it is important that children at Great Walstead grow to appreciate how much they have and how privileged they are. Our emphasis on charitable giving is part of learning that with privilege also comes the responsibility to help others who are in need. The school, therefore, holds events throughout the year and makes regular collections for different charities.
Each year we make donations of clothing, equipment and money to Isubilo, a health, education and advice centre near Ndola in Zambia, run by an former pupil and his wife. We have also been supporting a former teacher who is now teaching at a pre-school in Addis Ababa.
In addition we have run fund raising events for example, for the Golden Stable, a charity in Sri Lanka set up to help rebuild after the 2004 tsunami.
Currently we are raising funds for equipment for Chailey Heritage, a nearby school and centre for children with multiple disabilities. A group of Senior children visited the centre and then gave presentations in Chapel to pupils in Years 5-8.
Every year the Juniors put on a concert for local senior citizens. After the concert the children serve tea and cakes to their guests.
The school also participates in the nationally organised charity days such as “Red Nose Day”.
Children are additionally given the opportunity to raise money for charities of their choosing through the annual table top sale which is organised by the Friends of Great Walstead Association (FOGWA).
