Chapel
Great Walstead has been a Christian school ever since it began. This is set out in its formal constitution and is reflected in its designation by the Department for Children Schools and Families as a "school having a religious character". It is not linked to any one Christian denomination, but it has an evangelical basis. While promoting Christian values it is open to all children, irrespective of their background.
The Christian basis affects all aspects of the school's life, not just services in Chapel:
* it means that all children are valued as individuals and that a high standard of care is provided for all,
* it means that the whole curriculum is shaped by the Christian faith,
* it means that we try to base all our relationships and values on the teachings of the Bible,
* it means that the governors and staff work hard to promote and protect this Christian ethos.
(A fuller statement of our Christian ethos can be found on our policies page within this website.)
But our Christian heritage also means that our daily worship is central to who we are and what we do. By gathering together we celebrate our pupils’ achievements and our shared values in equal measure. Each assembly is an act of worship which gently introduces young minds to the possibilities of belief and the wisdom of Christians down the ages. Together we sing, pray, watch and listen in our dedicated and spacious Chapel. Children frequently help teachers take services by contributing readings, drama and music. All teachers take turns to lead services which are Christian in character. We have no particular denominational affiliation so welcome contributions from all flavours and hues of Christian life.
We meet as a whole school (Nursery to Seniors) four times a year in the Sports Hall at which parents are welcome. Otherwise services are held in our Sections in Chapel or other rooms. All Sections of the School hold their own Chapels and Houses meet for Chapel once each week.
